A common cause of divorce, according to divorce attorneys

During the summer, weddings are happening all over the country. Newlyweds and wary millennials want to know how to make marriages last. There are a lot of pieces of advice available regarding how to make a marriage work. However, divorce attorneys say there is a trend developing that is ruining marriages: pornography.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers held an informal meeting in 2002 and asked 350 divorce lawyers about the common reasons for marital break-ups. About 60 percent responded that internet porn has played a role in more than half of their divorce cases.

It's not just attorneys who have noticed the trend. In 2005, a licensed family and marriage therapist spoke before the U.S. Senate on her research on porn and divorce. She said that 56 percent of divorces had one party with an obsessive interest in porn online.

One lawyer said that he had found porn to be a prevalent issue in his practice, but that most spouses deny it. He also said that porn is cited as "Constructive Desertion," which means that there is a withdrawal by one spouse from sexual intimacy.

In recent years, a lot of research has been done that documents how addictive porn can be and how it can ruin sexual intimacy. However, it is shocking to hear that divorce attorneys are seeing it as a reason for many failed marriages.

If you are contemplating divorce, you may want to get the advice of a divorce attorney on how you should proceed. Should you consider mediation or litigation? Do you want to file a no-fault divorce or file for divorce on one of the legal grounds available? Your New York attorney can help you decide what direction will work for your particular situation.
