Yet another celebrity divorce has made headlines. This one is between Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. The couple’s divorce is final after 19 years of marriage.
Griffith was the filing party and she now walks away with $65,000 a month in spousal support, a painting by Picasso and the couple’s Aspen home. Banderas will get the Manhattan apartment, a Picasso pencil drawing and a Diego Rivera drawing. Banderas will pay for the expenses of the couple’s 17-year-old daughter until she reaches her 19th birthday. He will also shell out the money for her college and grad school expenses until 2021.
This is the fourth time Griffith has divorced and the second time Banderas has been through it. The two remain on friendly terms, though, posing for pictures together with their daughter when she graduated this past June.
The couple entered into a post-nuptial agreement back in 2004, which detailed how the proceeds from their movies would be split. The monies made between 2004 and 2014 will be split between the two. Those movies include “Expendables 3,” “Shrek 2,” “Machete Kills” and “Puss in Boots.”
While not everyone has the kind of assets this couple has, the assets that everyday couples have are just as important to them as these were to Griffith and Banderas. Understanding how a prenuptial and post-nuptial agreement can help in the event of a divorce is a wise move. It may not be the most romantic of gestures, but it does protect one’s assets in case the marriage does not survive the long-term. A family law attorney can help protect the assets you deserve in a divorce.
