What tasks must I do to prepare for divorce?

Preparing for your divorce may be the most important thing that you can do to make sure it goes through without any serious problems. You want to do as much in advance as you can so that you don't forget about anything crucial or run into unanticipated complications. A few key things to do include the following:

- Checking your credit report, especially to look for any debts that you have. This is especially important if you are not usually in charge of your debt since your spouse takes care of the bills.

-- Redirecting any mail that is to you alone to a new address or a P.O. box, rather than having it continue to come to your house.

-- Changing any passwords that you use for your computer, and especially those for your email, social media and credit card accounts. Sometimes, a spouse will attempt to hack these accounts to spy on the other person during the divorce.

-- Gathering any financial information, such as bank statements and paperwork detailing how much you and your spouse have in investments and other assets.

-- Creating a parenting schedule that you and your spouse can use. This can also be done in court, but doing it beforehand saves you time and may provide a more favorable outcome.

-- Changing estate planning documents such as wills as well as beneficiaries. When you change your will, be sure to switch your life insurance policy as well, since it may still go to the listed beneficiary, no matter what your will says.
