A divorce in a 'New York minute?'

How long does it take to get a divorce in New York? Unfortunately, it's more than a "New York minute." Each divorce is different and there are many factors that will affect how long the divorce will take to finalize. Some of those divorce issues include but are not limited to:

-- Child custody: If the couple does not see eye-to-eye on child custody, it may take mediation to settle the matter. It's also possible that no agreement can be reached and the judge will need to determine custody and visitation.

-- Property division: If there is a significant amount of assets, dividing them up can take some time. This is especially if a valuation is needed.

-- Spousal support: In some cases, determining the amount of spousal support can be difficult to decide. There are many factors taken into consideration, such as the income of each spouse, whether one spouse was a homemaker, how long training would take in order for a spouse to enter the workforce and much more.

-- Business valuation: For those with family-owned or closely-held businesses, it's important to determine what is part of the marital estate and what is not. You must ensure your interests are protected.
