What people should you surround yourself with after a divorce?

For many recent divorcees, it's difficult to know who to turn to for guidance, friendship and help. This can be because of trust issues that were exploited by an ex-spouse. It could be because they simply want to show everyone that they can make it on their own without anyone's help. The truth is, though, that everyone needs help, friendship and guidance at one point or another. Trying to get through this difficult period can be very hard to do without someone in your corner. Here are five people with whom you should surround yourself during a divorce:

-- Non-judgmental people: You've probably had enough of people judging you by the choices you've made. During a divorce, you might even find that the people you thought were close friends are judging every move you make or giving you unwanted advice. Be careful whom you confide in; look for people who can support you without making a judgment at the same time.

-- Fun people: Anyone who can provide you with a laugh is good to have around. You might catch a movie with your friends, grab a drink with co-workers after a long day or decide it's time to go shopping with your thrifty friend.

-- Money people: Money is usually a big issue during and after a divorce. By finding professionals to help you with your finances, you'll feel and be more secure.

-- People who will give it to you straight: This group can include therapists, advisors, coaches, clergy and more. Therapy can be a good choice, not only for you but for children, too.

-- Fix-it people: If you're not the sort of person who is considered a jack-of-all trades, then it could be very helpful to know a mechanic, contractor or handyman. Ask your family and friends for recommendations and avoid choosing someone off of Craigslist. You need someone dependable. Just because you got the house and car in the divorce property division process, doesn't mean you won't need repairs at some time.

Divorce isn't easy, but when you surround yourself with the right people, you can head out into the great unknown without feeling alone. If you need recommendations for professional help, your divorce lawyer is a good place to start.
