What you shouldn't expect in a divorce

During a divorce, you may feel as though your emotions are on a roller coaster. Perhaps you feel positive about the changes you are experienced on one day and the next you feel like your life will constantly be in a never-ending loop on that amusement park ride. Understanding what to expect during a divorce, as well as what not to expect, is important.

First, if you have a few moments of calm, don't expect it to last. As your divorce progresses, you may find the calm periods last a bit longer, but in the beginning, you will remember that feelings of calm and divorce are not things that generally go hand-in-hand.

Second, don't think that your friends will always be by your side. Friends will usually end up picking sides in a divorce, even if they don't want to. In some cases, friends who are in a marriage that is unhappy may not want to have their spouses around someone who is getting out of an unhappy marriage. You'll soon find that you have fewer invitations arriving for events for couples. You should focus on creating new relationships with other people who are single or with couples who don't mind having single people around them.

Finally, don't think that everyone will give you good advice. Experience in their own divorces can seem like something you need to hear about, but you might end up making decisions based on their experiences instead of what might be best for you. Get the support you need, but keep an open mind about making decisions that will be the best for you and your family.

Divorce isn't easy, but with help and guidance from your divorce attorney, you will find that this crazy, emotional period in your life will come to an end. Ask your attorney for recommendations for a therapist if you find you are having difficulties accepting the divorce.
