Digital solutions for your New York divorce

The Internet plays a huge role in almost everything we do today, and divorce is no exception. Experts say that taking a few simple online steps can prevent a lot of financial and property division headaches. To prevent your online life from being hijacked during your New York divorce, you should consider taking the following actions.

First and foremost, it is important to change all of your online passwords. Recent studies show that about two in three American couples share at least one online password, while about 27 percent share their e-mail access password. Although that might be a useful setup for your married life, this can become a nightmare as you are divorcing. Make sure that you change every online password – including those to your personal bank accounts and credit cards – as soon as possible during the divorce. Make sure you are doing this on a personal device that your ex has never accessed, as spy programs can be installed to obtain your new passwords.

Checking your social media privacy settings should also be a priority in the aftermath of a marital dissolution. After you change your password, you need to determine whether you want to keep your ex – and some of their “friends” – as online buddies. As a “friend,” this person might be able to see your social media posts, a situation that could actually have an impact in divorce court. Attorneys scour social media pages for information that could reveal hidden assets and other critical information.

Finally, you want to make sure that all of your gadgets are personally secured, and that you remove all of your information from any shared devices. It is also wise to terminate any shared services, including those for your cellphone or tablet. By following these simple steps, you can protect your online privacy during your own New York divorce proceedings.
