Captain and Tennille plan divorce after 39 years of marriage

Anyone who remembers their music will likely be surprised to hear that Captain and Tennille, famous for such hits as "Do That to Me One More Time" and "Love Will Keep Us Together," would call their marriage quits after 39 years. However, divorce among baby boomers is really not as uncommon as people might expect.

Toni Tennille is 73 years old, and her husband Daryl Dragon, better known as the Captain, is 71. Toni filed for divorce, but the terms of the split aren't yet clear. What is certain is that after almost 40 years of marriage, many spouses have accumulated assets such as real estate and retirement plans, and those assets have to be carefully divided in divorce.

Since the number of divorces among baby boomers has risen significantly since the early 1990s, divorce in this age group has been dubbed "gray divorce." Reportedly, a quarter of marital splits these days involve spouses who are 50 or older.

In the case of Captain and Tennille, it was reported that Tennille's divorce filing mentions matters of health insurance. Media sources have speculated that the mention of health issues relates to Dragon's suffering from a neurological condition. However, anyone going through a divorce may want to consider negotiating with regard to insurance plans and other assets that were acquired during the course of the marriage.

Retirement plans, stock options, real estate -- these are all items that, if designated as marital property, can be divided in divorce.
